AMERICAN CHARACTER DOLLS
The American Character Doll Company of New York City was founded by brothers Jacob and Max Brock and their partner Ed Schaefer in 1919. American Character produced dolls from 1919 until 1968. They produced dolls in composition, rubber, hard plastic and vinyl. Some of their more popular dolls were Sweet Sue, Tiny Tears, Betsy McCall, Toodles, Whimsies, and Tressy.
American Character dolls were considered top-of-the-line and sold exclusively to department stores such as Sears and Montgomery Ward, who would uphold the retail price set by American Character. They considered Madame Alexander as one of their biggest competitors.
Tiny Tears was the number one doll for American Character in the 1950's and accounted for about 30 to 50 percent of American Character's total sales. Sweet Sue also accounted for a major portion of their sales.
DID YOU KNOW: That in 1958 American Character was also known as American Miniature Doll Corp.? That from 1960 -1964 they used the name American Doll and Toy Company.
These Beautiful Brides are all ready to walk down the aisle. Both are Sweet Sue Walkers with original outfits.

This Sweet Sue Walker is truly breathtaking and ready to dance the night away. She is dressed in a beautiful lace and tulle dress over a taffeta underdress. The dress has a tie string closure with snaps in the back. The beaded "crown" on top of her head was added by a previous owner so I left it with her. Doll is from the collection of V. Donally.
